Coherence, 2021
Coherence is among the most architecturally resolved works in Murray's practice — a large circular form built from hundreds of fine Rimu spokes that radiate outward from a hollow centre, the whole suspended in a state of perfect, unlikely equilibrium.
The work draws on the structural logic of wheels, mandalas, and astronomical instruments, yet reads as none of these entirely. It is simply a thing of considerable presence: calm, precise, and quietly commanding. Made from heart Rimu, a native New Zealand timber prized for its density and warm golden tone, it carries the particular quality of wood that has grown slowly and been worked with care.
